Save the date: March 4, 7 p.m.

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Whether Austin is the best place to live or the best city for dating, when it comes to national rankings, we stand tall. But there's one area in which our fair city can always improve — Philanthropy.

To help Austinites prove they are just as willing to donate to the causes they care about as they are to flock to auditorium shores for a concert, I Live Here, I Give Here created Amplify Austin — a community-wide day of online philanthropy with the goal of raising $1 million in 24 hours from March 4 (7pm) until March 5 (7pm).

Help Amplify El Buen!

Beginning at 7 p.m. on March 4, 2013, go to www.AmplifyATX.org to select El Buen Samaritano as your charity of choice.

$1,000 is awarded each hour to the nonprofit that raises the most dollars for that hour throughout Amplify Austin.

Keep up with our participation in Amplify Austin on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

We have a challenge!

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

Hunger is a real concern in Austin. Did you know that, according to a recent Austin American-Statesman article, about 1 in 5 people in Austin lived in poverty last year? That is more than the national rate and higher than pre-recession rates. Through Hands for Hope, we directly address the issue of hunger happening in our own city. At El Buen Samaritano's Hands for Hope Thanksgiving Event, 1,400 families will not only receive a Thanksgiving basket, which will include a turkey, a pie and all the trimmings to prepare a Thanksgiving meal. They will also be connected with the appropriate community resources to receive the help they need beyond the holidays. Thanks to contributions from our friends, we are at 42 percent of our goal of $40,000. But we still need your help to reach our goal!

Help us address the challenge!

Do you know the face of hunger?

Thursday, October 11, 2012

Thursday, October 11, 2012

Living in one of the top 10 healthiest cities in the United States, it's no surprise that we hear of the nutritional value of various foods quite frequently. But nutritional value and even food costs aside, what is the true value of food? And what happens to a family when food is lacking? Meet a lady and a gentleman who have spent their lives working, but due to illness and a recent accident, they find themselves facing hunger.

Economic stability services, making their way to El Buen this fall!

Thursday, September 13, 2012

El Buen Samaritano's 2012-2017 Strategic Plan calls for the implementation of economic stability services as the third focus area of the organization, following health and education. To address the distinct needs of low-income workers and job-seekers age 50 and older in Austin, El Buen Samaritano will offer a financial capability program beginning on October 3.

The program, composed of three educational modules, will empower participants with free tools and knowledge on budgeting and goal-setting; taking charge of credit and debt; and developing a savings and retirement plan. The initial workshops are scheduled to take place on October 3, 10 and 24, from 12 to 1:30 p.m. A light lunch will be provided, and individuals 50 and older will be eligible for monetary incentives. The AARP Foundation Finances 50+ is sponsored by and developed in collaboration with Charles Schwab Foundation.

Voices from our students

Friday, August 10, 2012

This summer, El Buen offered a class titled ESL and the Media, where students could enhance their English language skills by watching different TV shows, movies and soap operas and reading newspaper articles and newsletters. The students enriched their vocabulary as they discussed and analized what they watched and read with one another and their instructors. One of our volunteer instructors, Lucia Duncan, tasked the students with writing media articles about the different classes El Buen Samaritano offers.
