Available Workshops & Classes:
Nutritional Cooking Classes teach participants to incorporate healthy lifestyle habits into their daily lives such as how to use the food pyramid and how to read nutrition labels. Promotores (health educators) inform participants about health issues such as obesity, diabetes, cholesterol and cardiovascular diseases. The facilitators perform a medical evaluation with each participant to determine his or her weight, blood sugar level, cholesterol level and blood pressure. The medical exam is voluntary.
Prenatal Health Education is an eight-session program based on the March of Dimes’ Comenzando Bien© curriculum, which provides women and their families with information about a healthy pregnancy; creates a supportive environment that promotes healthy behaviors; and empowers participants to become assertive, informed consumers of prenatal care services.
Breast Health Education: Through a collaboration with the Austin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, El Buen’s Una Decisión Inteligente (An Intelligent Decision) Program removes cultural and linguistic barriers faced throughout the entire continuum of breast health care and increases access to breast health information and services to women and men.
Wise Guys and Big Decisions is designed to prevent pregnancy during adolescence through the use of a teenager responsibility curriculum. It focuses on teaching middle and high school teenage boys and girls safe and appropriate dating practices, respect for others and the importance of abstinence. The program is made possible through a collaboration with the City of Austin Health Department, the International High School and Gardner Betts Juvenile Justice Center.
Cocinemos con los Niños (Cooking with the Children) is a bilingual, innovative, fun and educational nutrition program designed to teach elementary school children to identify different food groups and place them in the food pyramid. Cocinemos con los Niños teaches children about nutrition labels, exercise and safety tips for the kitchen, as well as guide them through the preparation of healthy and nutritious meals in the interactive and safe environment of a school classroom. Through a collaborative between the Austin Independent School District and El Buen Samaritano, Cocinemos con los Niños is part of El Buen's Combating Childhood Obesity through Exercise and Nutrition Initiative.
