The 3 C’s of volunteering at El Buen Samaritano:
We are always recruiting committed and compassionate volunteers in various capacities. Most volunteer roles require a commitment of one day per week for a period of two to four months. We recruit primarily three times during the year prior to each semester in January, May and August.
ESL Instructors and Teaching Assistants lead English classes for adult students by utilizing an easy-to-follow curriculum. Prior teaching experience is helpful but not required. Teachers should have a willingness to learn, be patient and love working with people. Spanish language skills are not required.
Commitment: One day a week for a full semester. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday mornings, 9:30 a.m. through 12:00 p.m. or Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday evenings, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Youth Program Assistants work with children ages six through 12 as a tutor or program assistant. In the fall and spring, the youth program focuses on improving students’ grades and educational success in school. In the summer, programs focus on learning retention, exercise, and fun in the Youth Summer Camp and Kids Club programs.
Commitment: One day a week for a full semester. Monday through Thursday afternoons 4:15 to 6 p.m. or Monday through Thursday evenings, 6 to 8 p.m.
Food Pantry Volunteers assist in the food pantry to provide groceries to families undergoing a difficult time financially. Volunteers help sort food, load grocery bags and provide a friendly face to clients as they receive their food.
Commitment: One day a week for at least one month. Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday mornings 9 a.m. to noon.
Garden and Nutrition Volunteers assist in the “Huerta Comunitaria” where families adopt 4×4’ raised garden beds to grow their own produce and learn about nutritional eating. Every second and fourth Friday of the month, we enlist the help of garden assistants to maintain and spruce up the garden. We also utilize volunteer support for nutrition consultations and in preparation of healthy recipes for food pantry clients.
Commitment: 2nd and 4th Friday mornings each month 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Yes! We utilize help from hundreds of volunteers annually to assist with community events, including several church groups, service organizations and Austin-based companies. Our yearly community event is the Hands for Hope in November, where 1,000 families are provided with a complete Thanksgiving meal.
Sign up for an upcoming community event here! Each individual must complete their own unique sign-up form.
Because most of our volunteer positions require training and involve direct service delivery with our clients, we are usually not the best fit for community service volunteers.
Occasionally, when we are in need of extra help in our food pantry, garden, or for special events, we can accept a short-term, temporary volunteer to complete their hours.
Typically, you should allow three months to complete your community service and be willing to complete the online application, background check and interview process prior to volunteering.
